Recommended Reads

At Avonwood, we love a reading challenge! We have created a list of 10 recommended reads for each year group. Children will find copies of each of these texts in their classrooms. Their challenge is to read all 10 by the end of the year (and prove to us that they have done so by answering a question/writing a book review!). Once your child has finished reading all 10 of these books, we have an extra challenge for them… 5 additional recommended reads!

To celebrate success, we award prizes when children have completed a certain number of recommended reads:

  • 3 recommended reads = leather Avonwood bookmark
  • 6 recommended reads = book themed badge
  • 10 recommended reads = book
  • 15 recommended reads (all recommended reads AND additional recommended reads completed!) = book token

Choosing Books to Read at Home

We often get asked for book recommendations – particularly in Key Stage 2. If you are looking for something new, we suggest starting with our list of ‘recommended reads’ for each year group. In addition, you can find some further suggestions below. Please do speak to us if you have any further queries.
