We will start off the new school year with our geography topic, ‘Here I am’. We will locate our school in our local area and identify local physical and human features on a map and during fieldwork - we will carry out our own observational sketches on our trip to Kings Park.

Next, we will be delving into our family’s history and finding out more about members of our family. We will host a wonderful grandparents afternoon tea to help us celebrate these family connections.

To start our spring term, we will look at ‘Where we are’ in geography where we will be locating our local area in the UK and identifying the four countries of the UK, as well as looking at key human and physical features. We will finish this unit by celebrating with a ‘culture day.’  In the second part of the term, we will be looking at ‘How the journey has changed’ in history lessons, and we will host our very own DIY Beaulieu at Avonwood!

In our last term, we will begin with our geography topic, ‘There you are’. In this unit, we will understand where we live on a global scale. We will be naming and locating continents and we will be making comparisons between the human and physical features of the UK with an area in Kenya. We will bring our learning to life in science and geography with a wonderful trip to Marwell zoo.

We will be rounding off our year together with our ‘Homes through time’ history topic where we will study how homes looked different in the past, using pictures and videos. Our trip to Highcliffe Castle will be sure to bring this learning to life!

FAQ's

What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?

The Phonics Screening Check is a statutory, government test. During the check, children will be asked to read 40 words. Most words are real, but some will be pseudo- words (alien words). Pseudo-words ensure children are using their decoding skills and not just relying on their memory of words read before. Some children may misread pseudo-words because they look similar to familiar words, therefore, each pseudo-word is clearly identified with an image of an alien.

When does the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check occur?

The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check occurs in June during the summer term. Children will undertake the Phonics Screening Check in a one-to-one setting with a teacher. It usually takes less than 10 minutes.

What if my child doesn’t pass the Phonics Screening Check?

If you child does not meet the expected level, they will receive additional phonics teaching and support in school. They will re-take the screening in Year 2.

What trips and visits do you complete in Year 1?

In Autumn, Year 1 will visit Kings Park.

In Spring, they will visit Marwell Zoo.

In Summer, we will visit Highcliffe Castle.

Where possible, other opportunities for visitors to visit us at school are also planned for.

What should my child bring to school every day?

Each day, your child should come equipped with their reading journal (signed daily), their reading book, a named water bottle, a named, waterproof coat. In the summer we ask for a named sunhat and sun cream to be brought into school. Pencils and other writing equipment are provided in our classrooms. Snack and milk are also provided daily.

What day of the week is homework set?

Homework is set on a Wednesday across the school.

I would like to support my child with their learning from home, what can I do to help?

Daily reading is fundamental to children’s progress, and we appreciate any support with reading. This could be a mix of the child reading to you and you reading to them too. Our weekly newsletters will offer a ‘Reach for the Star’s’ challenge and other home learning opportunities.

What days do our children need to wear PE kit?

In Year 1 we have PE on Monday and Friday. Children should attend school in full PE kit, including navy jogging bottoms and our branded Avonwood navy hoody.

What is Jurassic Maths?

Jurassic Maths is a maths hub providing a programme to be taught in school. It aims to teach mastery in mathematics inlcuding mathematical thinking, fluency, variation, and representations. Through these daily sessions children will continue to improve and consolidate their mathematical knowledge and skills, developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
